Food Properties Explorer

Instant · Deterministic · No login required

This explorer lets you search and browse foods by their traditional properties — temperature (hot, warm, neutral, cool, cold), flavour (sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, salty), and meridian affinity. The classifications come from classical materia medica and dietetic texts, not modern nutrition science. They describe how a food was traditionally understood to interact with the body's patterns, and they are presented here for educational reference. If you have a constitution tendency from our assessment tool, you can use this explorer to find foods that classical theory suggests harmonise with that tendency.

Food property classifications are traditional educational references, not medical dietary prescriptions. They do not account for food allergies, drug interactions, or individual medical conditions. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional before making significant dietary changes, especially if you have a health condition or take medications.

Where do these food property classifications come from?
They are drawn from classical Chinese dietetic and materia medica texts, where foods were categorised by their observed effects on the body — warming, cooling, moistening, drying, and so on. These are traditional educational categories, not modern nutritional classifications.
How do food properties relate to my constitution tendency?
Classical theory suggests that foods with opposite thermal properties to your dominant tendency help restore balance — cooling foods for heat-leaning tendencies, warming foods for cold-leaning tendencies. This is a general heuristic from traditional texts, not a personalised dietary prescription.
Why shouldn't I use this as a diet plan?
Food property classifications are a single lens among many. They don't account for calories, allergens, medication interactions, or your individual health status. Use this explorer for educational curiosity about traditional food theory, not as a substitute for professional dietary advice.
